Technology Addictionclose up photography of smartphone icons

Be wary of weaponized services. The things that are out to grab you by the leg and pull you under the water for a very long time—the algorithms (a.k.a. computer code that learns what you like or presents you with highly enticing clickbait).

YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, and more. Be careful of these things because they want to steal as much time from you as possible. Check them if you like, use them intelligently, but get out as quickly as you can because the algorithm is ready to snatch you like a praying mantis.

Isn’t time precious to us? How much do you value your time? Will you look back fondly on all the time you spent scrolling? How good do you feel after binging these apps? If you were to put a camera on your face and record your facial expressions while using it, would you see joy and happiness? Most likely not, except for rare occasions.

Trust me, I’ve had epic binges on my smartphone, and I’ve learned (after failing a HUGE number of times) to limit my use of these apps ruthlessly. This is a new challenge for humanity’s attention span, but we are gradually finding ways to defeat big tech.

  1. Enjoying all your posts Kyle, many good points and I think the praying mantis on your shoulder while meditating was definitely meant to be!
